The NS-3 Summer of Code programme has received a good deal of interest from students so far, and I’m pretty excited to see what the final set of applications will look like.

Anyhow, hurry up students, the deadline for NSoC is on the 15th of April, 2011 at 19:00 UTC! Visit the NSoC wiki to find information regarding the applying process. Meanwhile, we recommend that you discuss your proposals as much as possible on the ns-developers mailing list and with your potential mentors before you apply to keep your proposal focused and polished.

Unfortunately, ns-3 wasn’t selected as a mentoring organisation for GSoC 2011. But don’t worry, it doesn’t end with that. We are keen on self organising a summer of code programme of our own, so that we can support some student projects and offer mentoring for the same over the summer. While we haven’t decided on the exact plan yet, it is on our agenda for next week’s ns-3 developers’ meeting at Barcelona, co-located with Simutools 2011 and WNS3 2011. So stay tuned for updates from our end. If you have any ideas, suggestions or expectations from such a programme, feel free to get in touch with me and let me know what you think.

As the title suggests, ns-3-click is finally in. So go ahead, clone ns-3-dev, and test all your Click graphs today! And as always, patches and improvements are welcome.

Google Summer of Code 2011 is on. Students, what are you waiting for? Go through last year’s pages to narrow down on a mentoring organisation that suits you, and start getting your hands dirty by hacking on some projects as soon as possible. Remember, the earlier you start working on your proposal, the more refined it will be by the application deadline. And if your dream mentoring organisation doesn’t get selected, remember that it doesn’t stop you from contributing outside of GSoC.

So it’s official, I’ve successfully cleared Google Summer of Code 2010! It’s really good to see ns-3-click is being welcomed with open arms by the community! Even better, it’s already being used, even before the merge with ns-3-dev. Thanks to that, I was able to spot a few bugs in the code, one of which was a really ugly memory leak. The formal review is going on as of now, and with a little more time, I guess it should be ready for a merge with ns-3-dev. The only concern some of the developers have raised with my code is that I’m introducing a dependency with the Click L3 inside the Csma and Wifi NetDevice code. I knew I wouldn’t get away with that too easily, but I couldn’t figure out a better way of getting it done! Waiting for some good feedback here.
